Launching your Shopify store is exciting. But when you sit down to actually upload your first products, the questions start piling up fast: Which products should I list first? How do I price them? What photos do I use? How much information is enough?

If you’re a Kerala brand — selling anything from handloom textiles and Ayurvedic products to fashion accessories and homemade food — this guide is written specifically for you. Our team of Shopify developers in Kochi at ConvertEasy has helped 60+ local brands launch their first store, and we’ve seen every mistake in the book.

Here’s exactly what to do.

Step 1: Don't Upload Everything at Once

This is the most common mistake first-time Shopify sellers make. They wait until they have 200 products ready before launching. Don’t do this.

Your first 10 products should be your best 10 — your most popular, most photogenic, and most profitable items. Think of them as your store’s first impression. A tightly curated store of 10 great products always outperforms a cluttered store of 100 mediocre ones.

How to choose your first 10:
  • Pick your 3 bestsellers (if you already sell on WhatsApp/Instagram, you know what these are)
  • Add 3 products that photograph beautifully — visual appeal drives impulse purchases online
  • Include 2 products at a lower price point to reduce buying friction for first-time customers
  • Add 2 products that are unique to your brand — things no one else sells

Ready to Launch a Store That Actually Sells?

A complete Shopify product listing has 7 essential elements. Skip any one of these and you’re leaving money on the table.

1. Product Title

Keep it clear and searchable. Include what the product is + a key detail. For example:

  • “Handwoven Kasavu Saree — Off White with Gold Zari Border”
  • “Wayanad Wild Honey — Raw, Unfiltered, 500g”
  • “Kerala Coconut Shell Bowl — Handcrafted, Set of 2”
Avoid vague titles like “Beautiful Saree” or “Honey Product 1” — these don’t help Google or your customer.
2. Product Description

Write at least 150 words. Lead with a benefit, tell the story, list the specs, and end with a call to action. (See our previous blog on writing product descriptions for a full guide.)

3. High-Quality Photos

Upload a minimum of 3 photos per product:

  • Main photo: Clean white or neutral background, product centred
  • Lifestyle photo: Product in use — worn, cooked with, displayed in a home
  • Detail photo: Close-up of texture, stitching, label, or ingredient
You don’t need a professional studio. A well-lit corner near a window and a smartphone camera is enough to start.
4. Price

We cover pricing in detail in the next section. Never leave this blank or set it to zero.

5. Inventory Count

Tell Shopify how many units you have. This allows automatic “Sold Out” labels which create urgency – and prevents you from overselling.

6. Variants (if applicable)

If your product comes in different sizes, colours, or weights, use Shopify’s Variants feature. Don’t create separate listings for the same product in different sizes – it fragments your store and confuses customers.

7. SEO Title and Meta Description

Scroll down to the bottom of the product page in Shopify and fill in the SEO fields. Most Kerala sellers skip this entirely. This is how Google finds your product. Include your main keyword naturally, like “Buy handmade Kerala pickles online” or “Kasavu saree shop in Kochi.”

Step 3: How to Price Your First 10 Products

Pricing is where most first-time Shopify sellers either undersell themselves or price themselves out of the market. Here is a simple framework used by our Shopify developers in Kochi when advising new store owners:

The Kerala eCommerce Pricing Formula

Scroll down to the bottom of the product page in Shopify and fill in the SEO fields. Most Kerala sellers skip this entirely. This is how Google finds your product. Include your main keyword naturally, like “Buy handmade Kerala pickles online” or “Kasavu saree shop in Kochi.”

Selling Price = (Cost of Goods x 2.5) + Shipping Buffer + Platform Fee Buffer
Let's break that down
  • Cost of Goods: Raw material + labour + packaging
  • x 2.5: Your gross margin multiplier (covers overheads and profit)
  • Shipping Buffer: Add ₹50–100 to cover partial shipping costs
  • Platform Fee Buffer: Shopify + payment gateway fees are roughly 3–4% per transaction

Should You Offer Free Shipping?

This is one of the most debated questions in eCommerce. Our recommendation for Kerala brands just starting out:

  • Do NOT offer free shipping on every product — it eats your margin
  • DO offer free shipping above a threshold — e.g., “Free delivery on orders above ₹999” — this increases average order value
  • Be transparent: show the shipping cost clearly before checkout, not as a surprise at payment

Should You Offer Cash on Delivery (COD)?

In Kerala, COD is still a major trust signal – especially for first-time buyers. However:

  • COD return rates can be 20–40% higher than prepaid orders
  • Start with COD to build trust, then incentivise prepaid (e.g., “Save ₹50 on prepaid orders”)
  • Our Shopify team in Kochi can set up smart COD restrictions — like disabling COD for orders above ₹3,000 or for certain pin codes with high return rates

Step 4: Organise Your Products into Collections

Once you’ve uploaded your first 10 products, group them into Collections – Shopify’s version of categories. Even 10 products should have 2–3 collections. For example:

  • “Bestsellers” — your top 3 products, always visible on homepage
  • “New Arrivals” — whatever you just launched
  • “Under ₹500” — a price-based collection that reduces buying friction

Collections make your store feel organised and help customers find what they’re looking for quickly – which directly improves your conversion rate.

Step 5: Test Your Store Before Going Live

Before you share your store link with anyone, do this checklist:

Product: Kerala Mango Pickle

1. Add a product to the cart and complete a test order (Shopify has a test payment mode)

2. Check that all products look correct on mobile — over 70% of Kerala shoppers browse on phones

3. Make sure every product has a photo, price, and description

4. Confirm your WhatsApp chat button is visible on every product page

5. Test the checkout flow all the way to order confirmation
