Getting paid is the most critical function of your Shopify store. For Kerala brands selling online, three payment options make or break your conversion rate: Razorpay (covering UPI, cards, and net banking), and Cash on Delivery. This guide gives you the exact steps, accurate fees, and practical tips to set them up correctly.

Important: Shopify Payments is NOT available for Indian merchants in 2026. You must use a third-party payment gateway. Razorpay is the most trusted and widely used option for Kerala Shopify stores.

Real example: On a ₹1,000 UPI payment, Razorpay deducts ₹20 (2% fee) + ₹3.60 GST on the fee. You receive ₹976.40 in your bank within T+2 working days.
Most sellers think about COD in terms of the sale – they don’t calculate the full cost of a COD order that becomes an RTO. Here is what a ₹1,000 COD order that fails to deliver actually costs you:

KYC verification typically takes 1–3 working days. Apply 3–5 days before your planned launch date.
Log into your Shopify Admin using store owner credentials
Go to Apps > search ‘1 Razorpay’ > Install the official app by Razorpay
Shopify redirects you to Razorpay – log in and authorise the connection
Back in Shopify, click ‘Activate’ – Razorpay now appears at your checkout
Enable Test Mode: Settings > Payments > Manage Razorpay > tick ‘Enable test mode’
Place a test order on your store and complete a simulated payment
Verify the test shows ‘Captured’ in Razorpay Dashboard > Transactions > Payments
Once confirmed: untick test mode, enter your Live API Keys from Razorpay Dashboard > Settings > API Keys, and go live
Go to Shopify Settings > Checkout > Customer contact method and select ‘Phone number or email’. This ensures Razorpay collects the customer’s phone number at checkout — needed for UPI OTP and WhatsApp follow-ups.

In Shopify Admin > Apps, search ‘Releasit COD Fee & Partial Pay’ and install it
In the Releasit dashboard, enable Cash on Delivery – it will appear at checkout alongside Razorpay
Add a COD handling fee of ₹30–₹50 to recover the courier’s collection charge and reduce casual orders
Under Rules: disable COD if order total exceeds ₹2,500 – this protects against high-value RTO losses
Enable WhatsApp OTP verification – customers receive a WhatsApp message to confirm their COD order before it moves to packing. This single step eliminates most fake orders
Add pin code restrictions for high-RTO cities: Patna, Srinagar, Varanasi, Ranchi, and Northeastern states
Add a checkout message: ‘Save ₹50 – pay online with UPI or card’ to encour-zge prepaid orders
Track your COD vs. prepaid ratio monthly. A healthy target: 40–50% prepaid orders within 6 months of launch. The WhatsApp OTP and prepaid incentive message together are the fastest ways to shift this ratio.
